Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday asserted that elected representatives must remain accountable and maintain close contact with the people of their respective constituencies.

He described public acceptability as the biggest virtue a public representative can possess, rather than relying on money and muscle power to win elections.

“It is the acceptability among the public that counts and makes a difference. The office that someone holds is secondary," the Chief Minister said.

Addressing a seminar on “Responsibility and Accountability of Public Representatives to All Sections of the People,” organised by the Tripura Legislative Assembly under the aegis of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Saha said representatives should stay grounded and connected with their constituencies.

He added, “Public representatives should engage with people in their constituencies at least twice a year and use technology, if required, to maintain regular contact. The primary objective should be to ensure a dignified life and the welfare of the people.”

Saha said once elected, a representative becomes responsible for the entire constituency, including those who did not vote for them. “There is an old culture in the state where party affiliation becomes the primary yardstick to decide whether a public representative will be available to an individual or not. This has to stop. Money and muscle power or cheap tricks do not necessarily secure electoral success every time. On the other hand, honesty and integrity are always valued in our system,” he added.

Describing corruption as a serious challenge, the Chief Minister said, “Collective efforts are required to combat it, and public life must be guided by transparency. A public representative should always be aware of certain things in their area. They should know whether government-sponsored projects are being completed on time and maintain transparency. Social media should be used positively to establish a connection with the public.”

Saha said India has attained the status of a strong democratic nation and is gaining international recognition. He also informed the gathering that the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association would organise similar seminars in different districts of the state.
