Man arrested in Tripura for trying to enter Bangladesh illegally
AGARTALA: Authorities in South Tripura arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly attempting to enter Bangladesh illegally on Thursday (April 18), officials informed on Friday (April 19).
The individual, identified as Ayan Alam, claimed to be a “Pakistan-born Bangladeshi national”.
Alam was apprehended by locals at Jalefa in South Tripura and subsequently handed over to the police.
During interrogation, he stated that he hailed from Mayarampur village in the Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh, casting doubt on his initial claim of being born in Pakistan.
According to Sabroom sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Apu Das, Alam confessed that his family had relocated from Bangladesh to Pakistan 25 years ago.
Allegedly facing repercussions from Pakistani authorities due to lacking valid documentation, Alam's father returned to Bangladesh with him in 2011, while his mother, four brothers, and four sisters remained in Bangladesh.
Further investigation revealed that Alam illegally entered India via West Bengal in 2014 and later moved to Kerala, where he found employment at a company for two years.
Subsequently, he relocated to New Friends Colony in Delhi, where he engaged in collecting recyclable waste for a factory.
Alam claimed that he attempted to cross into Pakistan from Kashmir recently but was unsuccessful.
After being detained by the special branch in Delhi on March 15, he was dispatched to Agartala via Tripura Sundari Express and arrived on April 18.
Alam's journey took another turn when he contacted a tout to facilitate his entry into Bangladesh.
However, he was intercepted by locals en route to Manubazaar.
Upon his arrest, authorities recovered Alam's mobile phone, Indian currency, and several Indian documents, including an Aadhaar card.
While Alam maintains his Bangladeshi citizenship, questions surrounding his presence in Indian Territory despite border security measures have prompted further investigation.
Authorities are also exploring possible links between Alam and illegal organizations or outfits, although details remain undisclosed at this time.
