AGARTALA: The ongoing debate over the citizenship amendment act (CAA) has ignited a new war of words between Pradyot Debbarma, founder of Tipra Motha party, and Sudip Roy Barman, a Congress MLA and former BJP minister.

The dispute centres on the implementation of CAA in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

In a heated audio message released on Tuesday (May 21), Pradyot accused the Congress party of contributing to the diminishing status of Tripura’s indigenous population.

His comments were a direct response to allegations by Sudip Roy Barman, who criticized Tipra Motha for its perceived silence on the CAA issue after forming an alliance with the BJP.

Pradyot countered by highlighting Sudip's political inconsistency.

He stated Sudip's numerous party switches—from Congress to Trinamool Congress (TMC), then to BJP, before re-joining Congress when his political ambitions were unmet.

“This man always does politics for himself,” Pradyot asserted.

Addressing Sudip's accusations about Tipra Motha's stance on CAA, Pradyot clarified his continued involvement in the Supreme Court case against the Act.

He reaffirmed his commitment to preventing the implementation of CAA within the TTAADC and criticized Sudip for neglecting the broader security concerns of indigenous people living outside the ADC areas.

Pradyot stressed that his party's agreement was with the Government of India, not just the BJP, and that his primary focus remains on safeguarding the interests of the indigenous community.
