Agartala: A significant blow to the illegal drug trade was dealt as Tripura Police executed a successful raid late Sunday night, seizing over 7,000 bottles of banned cough syrups valued at Rs 50 lakh and apprehending one individual.

The raid, conducted in the Rangamatia area of Sonamura Sub-division within Tripura’s Sepahijala District, which borders Bangladesh, marks a crucial step in curbing illicit activities.

Jayanta Kumar Dey, Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura Police Station, revealed that acting on confidential information, they raided the residence of Tajul Islam. The operation unearthed a hidden stockpile of illicit substances.

"During the raid, we discovered two varieties of banned cough syrup, Phensidil and Corex, concealed within Tajul Islam's residence. Shockingly, a similar cache of prohibited substances was found at the adjacent residence of his brother, Imran Hussain. The seizure comprised an astonishing 2,400 bottles of Corex and 5,100 bottles of Phensedyl, collectively estimated to be valued at over Rs 50 lakh on the black market," Dey explained.

Tajul Islam, suspected to be a significant figure in the illegal drug trade network, was arrested during the operation. However, his brother, Imran Hossain, managed to evade capture, fleeing the scene upon the arrival of law enforcement officials.
