Agartala: The Tripura Police have seized banned cough syrups valued at Rs 12 lakh in the grey market from an abandoned room at the Khakchang Residential Complex at Nandan Nagar in the state’s capital Agartala.

Prompt action by the alert locals led to the discovery of the banned contraband item, highlighting community vigilance in curbing illegal activities.

According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Subrata Barman of the New Capital Complex, residents got suspicious after noticing individuals unloading several sacks into an unused room that had been lying abandoned for a prolonged period.

“Thanks to the vigilance of the locals, we were tipped-off about the suspicious activity. When our team arrived, we found 35 sacks filled with approximately 6,000 bottles of banned cough syrup,” SDPO Barman said.

Though the culprits managed to flee from the spot before the police arrived, the seizure of such a large quantity of contraband items highlights the menace of drug trafficking in the region.

With the market value estimated at Rs 12 lakh, authorities are now focusing on identifying and apprehending the culprits behind the act.
