Tripura panchayat elections: BJP wins majority of seats uncontested
Agartala: The Tripura state election commission (SEC) announced that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state has secured approximately 70 percent of the seats in Tripura’s three-tier panchayat system uncontested.
Out of the total 6889 seats in Tripura, which include gram panchayats, panchayat samitis, and zilla parishads, the BJP won 4805 seats without opposition.
In the gram panchayats, the BJP secured 4550 out of 6370 seats uncontested, meaning there will be no polling in 71 percent of these seats.
For the remaining 1819 gram panchayat seats where elections will be held, the BJP has fielded candidates in 1809 seats.
The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has fielded candidates in 1222 seats, the Congress in 731 seats, and BJP ally Tipra Motha in 138 seats.
Polling in one seat in the Maheskhala Panchayat of West Tripura district will be delayed due to the death of the BJP candidate.

In the panchayat samitis, the BJP won 235 out of 423 seats uncontested, which accounts for 55 percent of the seats.
Polling will be held for the remaining 188 seats, with the BJP fielding candidates in all of them.
The CPI-M has nominated candidates in 148 seats, Congress in 98 seats, and Tipra Motha in 11 seats.
For the zilla parishad, the BJP won 20 out of 116 seats uncontested, approximately 17 percent.
Polling will take place for the remaining 96 seats, with the BJP fielding candidates in all of them.
The CPI-M has candidates in 81 seats, and Congress in 76 seats.
The last date for withdrawal of candidature was July 22, and polling is scheduled for August 8. The votes will be counted on August 12.
