Tripura to merge 165 low-enrolment schools with nearby institutions

Agartala: Tripura chief minister Manik Saha announced that approximately 165 schools with low student enrolment will be merged with other nearby schools to enhance educational quality and address teacher shortages.

The Tripura education department has conducted a comprehensive survey to identify these low-enrolment schools, aiming to optimize resources and provide better educational opportunities for students.

“Raising the alarm over the move to rationalize students and teachers in state-run schools will not bring fruitful results. Schools mushroomed in the state due to political reasons. We have to ensure quality education by merging schools with a low number of students with schools that have a good number of students,” the Tripura CM said.

Tripura CM Manik Saha pointed out that some schools operate with as few as four students, staffed by two or three teachers.

The merger plan, according to the Tripura CM, will be beneficial for both students and teachers, addressing the shortage of teaching staff and improving the overall learning environment.

The identified schools will be merged with institutions preferably located within a 1 km radius to minimize disruption for students.
