AGARTALA: The Tripura government is prioritising the development of a multilingual education system, in alignment with the NEP-2020, in the state.

This was stated by Tripura chief minister Manik Saha on Wednesday (February 21).

Tripura CM Manik Saha said that his government is focusing on promoting mother tongue of all ethnic tribes in the Northeast state.

He highlighted that students now have the opportunity to study in eight tribal languages, including Kokborok, in schools.

“The National Education Policy 2020 underscores the importance of promoting a multilingual education system nationwide,” said Tripura CM Manik Saha.

This was remarked by the Tripura chief minister during a program held to commemorate International Mother Language Day.

The Tripura chief minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to honouring all languages, noting the introduction of Kokborok in 1296 primary schools, 115 secondary schools, and 65 higher secondary schools.

Furthermore, Chakma language has been incorporated into 123 schools, and students also have the option to study in languages such as Halam, Kuki, Mizo, Manipuri, and Garo at the school level.

“In Tripura, education in Kokborok and Mizo languages is available up to the 12th standard. Aspiring job candidates can write their exams in Kokborok for competitive tests like the Teachers' Eligibility Test (TET) and Tripura Judicial Service,” he added.

The day was commemorated with a vibrant rally in the city to celebrate International Mother Language Day, observed annually on February 21 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity as well as multilingualism.
