Tripura: Curfew in Jirania Sub-Division after communal unrest
Agartala: The district administration has enforced 163 BNSS in the Jirania Sub-division of West Tripura District, effective until August 28, following the desecration of a Goddess Kali idol that sparked communal unrest in Durganagar village on Sunday night.
According to police, a group of miscreants attacked Durganagar village in Jirania, vandalizing multiple houses and setting them ablaze after discovering the damaged idol of Goddess Kali in a local temple.
The attackers reportedly targeted members of the minority community, with around 10 to 12 houses affected, some vehicles torched, and livestock harmed.
In response to the violence, the administration quickly deployed a significant security force to the area, managing to bring the situation under control.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, who is also the local MLA, rushed to the scene to speak with the victims and help restore peace.
"The situation is currently under control, and no new incidents have been reported," said an official source.
"We have stationed security personnel in the area to maintain order", said Police.
On Monday, West Tripura District Magistrate Vishal Kumar issued an order implementing 163 BNSS (Section 144) in Jirania Sub-division, citing concerns over the potential for further disturbances.
The order prohibits the assembly of five or more people in the region, with exceptions for military and paramilitary forces, police personnel, government employees on emergency duty, and patients needing urgent medical care.
The order, which was passed ex-parte due to the urgent need to maintain public peace, remains in effect from 1:00 AM on August 26 until 1:00 AM on August 28.
