Agartala: Tripura CPIM MLA Jitendra Chaudhury on Friday wrote a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer, Puneet Agarwal to direct police to arrest culprits who allegedly assaulted a polling agent for INDIA Bloc during home voting.

Chaudhury in his letter said that the apprehension that CPIM representative expressed about the security of the Opposition Polling Agents in the all-party meeting held on 9th April, has unexpectedly come to be true even during the polling of the aged (85 and above years) voters in their respective houses.

“I am attaching herewith the copy of an FIR of one Satyabrata Chowdhury which will speak for itself. Chowdhury was beaten up while intending to perform as Polling Agent for INDIA Bloc candidate Ashis Saha and unfortunately, this assault took place in front of the Sector Officer and Presiding Officer accompanied by security personnel who did not take any initiative to restrain the miscreants nor take any action against them. Encouraged by the passive role of the election officials and the security forces, the accused Sukesh Debnath and his gang raided the house of the complainant last night and threatened all family members with dire consequences. Unfortunately, the NCC PS has taken no action to arrest the accused till now”, the letter added.

He further said that if the ruling BJP could be so desperate in the voting of only a handful of aged voters, it may be indicative of what they would do to reduce the election to a farce.

“I request you to direct the competent police authority to arrest the culprits mentioned”, the letter added.
