Agartala: The opposition Congress on Monday held demonstrations across Tripura and submitted deputations to the offices of the sub-divisional magistrates seeking adequate financial assistance for the flood-hit people of the state.

Congress workers numbering thousands took to the streets in all the 21 sub-divisions of the state.

Talking to reporters, Congress legislator and former minister Sudip Roy Barman highlighted the losses suffered by people across the state due to the devastating floods.

“The so-called double engine Central government has not extended any aid to the state for flood relief. This shows how much importance the Central government gives to Tripura. People are starving, they have endured severe losses. People are in distress but there’s no one to pay attention,” Barman said.

The MLA alleged that Congress workers were attacked while advocating for flood victims at Mohanpur in Tripura West.

“Nine people were seriously injured and are currently being treated. BJP goons attacked us inside the SDM’s office while we were there to speak on behalf of the flood victims. This is beyond fascism. We stand with the people and are fighting for their rights,” he added.

At least 38 people lost their lives and over one lakh were displaced, losing their houses in the catastrophic floods that hit the state in August.
