AGARTALA: Expressing deep concern over the increasing prevalence of injection drug use among school students, Tripura chief minister Manik Saha emphasized the importance of parental vigilance during a program in Gomati district on Tuesday (February 27).

Highlighting the surge in ganja cultivation during the tenure of the Left Front government in Tripura, CM Saha noted that awareness of this issue emerged only after a change in regime.

He underscored the severity of the situation, citing approximately 1100 school students and young individuals in Tripura identified as injection drug users in the state.

Attributing the influx of drugs to their transportation from Myanmar via Mizoram and Assam, the Tripura CM stressed the urgent need for concerted efforts to address this growing menace.

He pointed out that Tripura ranks second highest in the Northeast for drug seizures and destruction, following Assam.

Encouraging parents to remain vigilant, Saha outlined the government's commitment to combatting drug abuse, including the establishment of de-addiction centres in all eight districts of Tripura.

He emphasized ongoing efforts by government agencies to transform Tripura into a drug-free state, noting that ganja cultivation had become an alternative to traditional crops but is now being addressed proactively.
