Tripura CM backs new criminal laws, reflects on emergency as a ‘Black Day’

Agartala: Tripura chief minister Manik Saha has expressed strong support for the newly introduced criminal laws, stressing on their necessity and alignment with the current needs of the country.

Speaking on the matter, Tripura CM Manik Saha stated, “This was very necessary. It was the need of the hour. Our union home minister has talked about it in Parliament. It has been implemented in Tripura as well.”

The Tripura CM highlighted the urgency and importance of these laws in addressing contemporary challenges.

“The introduction of these laws is a significant step forward. It shows our dedication to maintaining law and order and adapting to new societal needs,” Saha noted.

In his remarks, CM Saha also drew attention to the historical context of the Emergency imposed in India from 1975 to 1977.

He described it as a dark period in the nation's history, stating, “As far as the Emergency is concerned, you know, it is a black day for us.”

The new criminal laws are part of a broader effort to modernize the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act.
