Agartala: In a significant move aimed at enhancing cancer care services, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Sunday the allocation of 15 acres of land by the state government for the establishment of a new cancer hospital in the North district.

Saha made this announcement while speaking at an event commemorating World Cancer Day held at the A B Regional Cancer Hospital in Agartala.

"Today's World Cancer Day theme, focusing on closing the care gap, underscores the importance of timely treatment and awareness. Despite the challenges, we've seen a shift in the narrative around cancer from hopelessness to resilience. Early detection and access to quality care significantly improve survival rates," stated Saha.

In his address, CM Saha, who also serves as the Health Minister of Tripura, drew attention to the prevalence of oral cancer in the North East region.

"The incidence of oral cancer remains alarmingly high in the North East. By promoting awareness and discouraging tobacco and alcohol consumption, along with reducing single-use plastic, we can curb the cancer burden. Prevention remains pivotal," emphasized Dr. Saha.

Acknowledging the commendable performance of the Atal Bihari Regional Cancer Hospital (ABRCH) in Agartala, Dr. Saha affirmed the government's commitment to expanding cancer treatment facilities.

"The ABRCH has emerged as a premier cancer institute in the North East. Our government, in collaboration with the hospital, aims to provide affordable and comprehensive cancer care. We have approved the allocation of 15 acres of land, free of cost, to Dr. R Ravi Kannan, an eminent oncologist and Director of Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC), to establish a new cancer hospital in the North District. This initiative will benefit residents of Unakoti as well, addressing the region's specific health challenges related to dietary habits and tobacco use," added Saha.
