Guwahati: After the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) received unconditional support from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), actor-turned-politician Vijay overcome the last obstacle in his attempt to become Tamil Nadu's next chief minister on Saturday.

The TVK-led alliance now has 121 MLAs, more than the 118-member majority needed to form the government in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, due to the backing of the two parties that each won two seats in the Assembly election.

The backing came after days of uncertainty, during which Vijay was unable to demonstrate majority support in three separate meetings with the Governor over the past three days.

Following the Assembly election results, which saw the two-year-old TVK emerge as the single largest party with 108 seats, surpassing both the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the development ends four days of intense political negotiations.

However, the party’s effective strength stands at 107, as Vijay will have to vacate one of the two constituencies from which he was elected.
