Meghalaya: Sohra half marathon to see runners from Ethiopia, Kenya, Bangladesh

Guwahati: The much-awaited third edition of ‘Sohra International Half Marathon’ will be held on September 21, 2024 in Meghalaya’s Cherrapunjee.

The mega event will witness the participation of more than 7,000 runners from across the globe. Athletes from Ethiopia, Kenya and Bangladesh are also set to take part in the foot race.

Recognised by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), the marathon is being jointly organised by the Meghalaya Athletics Association and the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Meghalaya.

Director of Meghalaya Sports and Youth Affairs Dikki D. Shira said sufficient funds have been earmarked for organising the international event.

“Everything is in place, and all the sub-committees have been activated and are already functioning. We are confident the event will be a grand success,” he said.

President of MSOA John F. Kharshiing said it is not just a marathon but a way of expressing the significance of health and fitness in the hill state.

The categories of the event include 21k elite open (above 18 years), 21k open (above 18 years), 10K open (40 to 50 years), 10k open (50 to 60 years), 10k veteran (above 60 years) and 5k run for fun.

According to the organisers, participants this time have more than doubled, with 7,736 runners having registered their names so far.

The marathon will start from Laitsohpliah for 21k, Wah Kba for 10k and Cherrapunjee Presbyterian School for 5k.

The last date for registration is September 10.
