AGARTALA: Opposition leaders from TIPRA Motha party in Tripura are set to initiate an indefinite hunger strike in the autonomous region of Tripura starting from February 28.

The hunger strike is aimed at drawing attention to the longstanding “grievances of the Tiprasa community”.

Following a meeting with party leaders, TIPRA Motha president Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl announced plans for the hunger strike, criticizing the central government for its failure to address their concerns.

He accused the government of intentionally delaying solutions to the “issues faced by the Tiprasa community and other indigenous groups”.

Hrangkhawl further alleged that the BJP is actively engineering defections within TIPRA Motha to undermine its strength.

Regarding the hunger strike, Hrangkhawl stated that they are prepared to fast until their demands are met, even if it means fasting unto death.

Meanwhile, TIPRA Motha leader Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, who recently threatened a hunger strike until death, has been summoned to New Delhi for discussions.

Debbarma expressed his frustrations, citing the neglect of indigenous communities and cultural suppression under leftist rule in Tripura.

He emphasized the need for change and solidarity among the indigenous population.

He reiterated the resilience of the indigenous people, stating, “One Pradyut will die, 5000 Pradyut will rise.”

TIPRA Motha's primary demand is the establishment of a separate state called “Greater Tipraland” for the indigenous population of Tripura.

Meanwhile Tripura chief minister Manik Saha has refused to comment on the proposed hunger strike of the TIPRA party saying: "I will not comment on this. We are looking into it. When something will be done, we will let you know."
