Guwahati: The second edition of International Tawang Marathon took place on Thursday morning in the high-altitude town of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, coinciding with the United Nations Day.

Jointly organised by the Arunachal Pradesh government and Indian Army, the event this year attracted as many as 4,580 participants, including 1,199 women, from across 27 states of India and two friendly foreign nations.

An 80-year-old runner from Mumbai was one among the 4,580 participants, showcasing Tawang Marathon appeal to people of all ages.

The event was graced by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Gajraj Corps Lieutenant General Gambhir Singh, both of whom ran alongside the participants, highlighting the spirit of unity and collaboration that defined the event.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Eastern Himalayas, the marathon presented a significant challenge, with runners navigating steep inclines and sharp descents that tested their endurance in the high-altitude terrain.

Participants were rewarded with breathtaking views of Tawang’s pristine landscape along the route.

Beyond being a race, the Tawang Marathon provided an economic and cultural boost to the region.

The influx of thousands of participants and visitors immensely benefited local businesses, particularly in tourism and hospitality.

The event showcased Tawang’s potential as a world-class adventure tourism destination while highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the area.

Visitors had the unique opportunity to experience the traditions and lifestyle of the local Monpa community.

The marathon helped strengthen connections between the local population and the Indian Army.

The collaborative effort in organising the event emphasised the deep bond shared between the people of Arunachal Pradesh and the Indian Army.

As the second edition of International Tawang Marathon concludes successfully, it firmly establishes Tawang on the global marathon map, reinforcing its reputation as a premier destination for adventure, culture and community spirit.
