Study finds Mizoram male population at higher risk of heart disease
Guwahati: A recent study conducted by researchers in Assam and Mizoram has revealed that Mizoram's tribal population is now at a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases, despite their previously active lifestyle.
The study, led by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), analyzed 1,812 individuals from tribal villages in both states and found that tribal males in Mizoram, particularly those over 35 and overweight, are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease.
Tribal males in Mizoram are at a higher risk of CVD due to high blood pressure, low HDL levels, and obesity.
The study also found that Smoking is more prevalent among Mizoram tribals (24.5%), while Assam tribals consume more alcohol (22.6%).
Along with this, 55.9% of Mizoram's tribal population is obese, compared to only 21.9% in Assam.
It also stated that Assam's tribal communities are more physically active due to their involvement in agriculture.
The study also highlights a concerning rise in diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidaemia among Mizoram's tribal population, all of which contribute to cardiovascular diseases.
