Guwahati: Legendary umpire Dickie Bird, one of the game's most iconic and beloved figures, died on Tuesday, September 23 at his home at the age of 92.

Born on 19 April 1933 in Barnsley, Yorkshire, Bird was devoted to cricket.

Bird stood in 66 Test matches and 69 ODIs between 1973 and 1996.

He also officiated in three Cricket World Cup finals.

Bird's ability "to command respect while maintaining warmth and humour made him one of the most popular officials in the game. Players often recalled his fairness and humanity, and his trademark mannerisms – from his white hat to his nervous shuffles – endeared him to spectators," writes India Today.

Bird's Test at Lord's in 1996, was also the debuts of Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid.

The Yorkshire County Cricket Club said in its tribute: "He leaves behind a legacy of sportsmanship, humility, and joy - and a legion of admirers across generations. He will be truly missed by all at the Club, having spent an incredible amount of time in support of everyone here and will be remembered as one of the greatest characters in Yorkshire's history."

Bird also ran the Dickie Bird Foundation, which provides opportunities for underprivileged youngsters to participate in sport.

He was influential on and off the field and has left an indelible mark, not just on cricket but on sports culture in the UK.
