Sikkim: Gnathang village to introduce ice hockey under Vibrant Village Programme
Gangtok: Sikkim’s Indo–China border village of Gnathang, located at an altitude of over 13,700 feet above sea level, is set to introduce ice hockey soon under the Vibrant Village Programme.
Preparatory work for the sport has already begun in the high-altitude village, marking a significant step towards promoting winter and adventure sports in the region.
In addition to ice hockey, several adventure sports activities have also been initiated in Gnathang, including cycling, rock climbing, and other outdoor pursuits.
These initiatives aim to boost adventure tourism, create new opportunities for local youth, and project Gnathang as a unique high-altitude sports and tourism destination on the national map.
It has been informed that the Tushar Nikhare, District Collector of Gangtok, visited the village and reviewed the ongoing preparations and facilities related to the newly introduced sports and adventure activities.
Local resident Thupden Bhutia speaking to media welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that it will bring sustainable tourism and employment opportunities while highlighting the strategic and scenic importance of the border village.
