Guwahati: An avalanche alert has been issued for high-altitude regions of Gangtok and Pakyong districts in Sikkim, officials said on Saturday, amid concerns over unstable snow conditions.

According to an advisory by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), avalanches are likely in areas above 3,500 metres over the next 24 hours. The warning follows shifting weather patterns that are expected to increase snow instability in vulnerable zones.

Authorities said the situation is under close watch and urged residents, tourists and travellers to exercise caution and adhere to official advisories.

Meanwhile, several parts of the state have been witnessing heavy rainfall since Friday, further aggravating conditions in higher reaches. In addition, key routes connecting Gangtok to Tsomgo Lake and Nathula have been temporarily closed due to heavy snowfall.

Officials have advised against travel to high-altitude areas until conditions stabilise and further updates are issued.
