Sikkim: Assam labourer killed at Teesta Stage III hydel project site
Guwahati: A 28-year-old labourer from Assam’s Dhemaji district died after being struck by a reversing concrete mixer at the Teesta Stage III Hydro Electric Project site in Chungthang, Sikkim, in the early hours of Thursday.
The deceased, identified as Bikuram Kuli, had just completed a 12-hour night shift at the 1,200 MW hydroelectric project in Mangan district when the incident occurred around 4:55 am.
According to police, Kuli was standing behind a transit mixer as it reversed to unload materials at the coffer dam construction area. The vehicle, which had arrived from a crusher plant, hit him during the manoeuvre, leaving him critically injured.
Co-workers immediately rushed him to the Chungthang Primary Health Centre. He was later referred to the district hospital in Mangan but succumbed to his injuries on the way.
The driver, Gidion Rai, a resident of Soreng district in Sikkim, has been detained for questioning.
Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and the Motor Vehicles Act, including charges of rash and negligent driving causing death.
Authorities have conducted a site inspection, and an executive magistrate has been requested to oversee the inquest. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination as further investigation is underway.
