GANGTOK: Multiple incidents of stone pelting were reported in Gangtok following the swearing-in ceremony of the new government in Sikkim.

The violence targeted the homes of prominent opposition politicians, leading to heightened tensions in Sikkim.

According to Sikkim police, residences of former MLAs Mechung Bhutia and Norzang Lepcha of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) party in Burtuk were attacked.

The home of former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia in Lumsey also came under attack.

Bhutia had recently lost assembly elections to Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) candidate Rikshal Dorjee Bhutia in the Barfung constituency.

CCTV footage also surfaced showing men with their faces covered by scarves pelting stones at these homes of opposition leaders.

Additionally, the residence of independent MP candidate Nawin Kiran Pradhan was similarly targeted.

In response to these incidents, Sikkim police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
