GANGTOK: All 1447 tourists stranded in the landslide-affected Mangan district of Sikkim have been safely evacuated.
The final group of 158 tourists was rescued and evacuated on Wednesday (June 19), concluding successful a three-day operation.
The rescue mission began on June 17, with 50 tourists initially evacuated.
The following day, June 18, saw a significant increase in rescues, with 1237 tourists brought to safety.
The operation was completed on the third day with the successful evacuation of the last 158 tourists from Chungthang and the northern regions of Mangan district in Sikkim.
District Magistrate of Mangan in Sikkim – Hem Kumar Chettri – credited the coordinated efforts of various agencies for the success of the operation.
The operation was a jointly conducted by the Mangan district administration, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the Border Roads Organization (BRO).
Many of the rescued tourists expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Sikkim government officials and the local community for their compassionate response during the crisis.
