Sikkim emerges as hub as scientists eye hydrogen as key to clean energy future

GANGTOK: The global quest for clean energy alternatives sees Indian scientists turning their attention to hydrogen, a promising clean energy source.

Sikkim has emerged as a pivotal region for green hydrogen production, designated by the central government as one of seven states in its bid to position India as a global green hydrogen hub.

Notably, Sikkim holds a unique distinction as the only fully green state in India, aligning perfectly with the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

This mission aims to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen as a clean energy source while fostering the development of efficient supply chains for hydrogen transportation and distribution.

Dr Bhaskar Chakraborty, associate professor and head of the department of chemistry at Sikkim Government College, highlighted Sikkim's steadfast commitment to environmental sustainability, evident in everyday practices like pesticide-free vegetable production and the complete absence of plastic.

The Sikkim government's proactive measures, such as prohibiting industries within township peripheries, further underscore its dedication to environmental preservation.

Dr Chakraborty noted the central government's endorsement of Sikkim as the primary choice for upcoming projects related to the installation of green hydrogen production plants, signalling a significant stride towards a sustainable future fuel alternative.

Scientists are optimistic about the potential of hydrogen technology to extend the benefits of renewables beyond the electricity sector.
