GANGTOK: Pahal Man Subba, a prominent political figure in Sikkim and the state’s second Lok Sabha MP, passed away on Thursday (June 27) at a hospital near Gangtok after battling a prolonged illness.
Subba’s demise was confirmed by his family.
Pahal Man Subba, aged 90, achieved electoral success in the 1980 Lok Sabha elections under the banner of the Sikkim Janata Party (SJP) and served as an MP until 1984.
His victory marked a significant milestone as he became the first elected MP from Sikkim following its integration into India.
Prior to this, in the 1977 Lok Sabha polls, Congress leader Chhatra Bahadur Chhetri had been elected uncontested from the region.
His family announced that Pahal Man Subba's mortal remains will be transported to his ancestral village of Timburbung in the Soreng district of Sikkim, where his last rites will be conducted on Friday (June 28).
Sikkim chief minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family, stating, “I offer my prayers for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.”
The Sikkim CM also visited the Central Referral Hospital, where Subba had breathed his last, and paid homage.
