Rape convict to be freed in 2 years takes own life in Tripura jail

Agartala: A convict, serving a sentence for rape at the Central Correctional Home at Bishalgarh in Sepahijala district of Tripura, was found dead on Wednesday, apparently by taking his own life inside a toilet.

Speaking to reporters, Bishalgarh sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Dulal Datta while confirming the incident said, the deceased, Dilip Debbarma, was serving a 12-year sentence for rape. 

“The Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Bishalgarh informed us about the incident. Upon receiving information, we immediately rushed to the site,” he added.

SDPO Datta said the deceased had already served 10 years of his sentence and would have been freed in a couple of years.

“The deceased, Dilip Debbarma, was a resident of Jirania in Tripura’s West district. He had served 10 years of his sentence, with only two years left,” he said.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the convict has been initiated.
