Guwahati: On Sunday, April 21, during a campaign event in Banswada, Rajasthan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sparked controversy by allegedly making misleading statements regarding India's Muslim community.

Rather than focusing on Hinduism, Modi was accused of attacking Muslims, suggesting they were "infiltrators" and insinuating that the opposition would distribute resources to them if elected.

Modi referenced his predecessor, Manmohan Singh, alleging that Singh had claimed Muslims had the first right to the country's property, which was debunked as false. The Prime Minister's Office clarified Singh's statement from 2006, emphasizing that it was a misinterpretation and that resources were allocated equitably among various marginalized groups.

Critics accused Modi and the BJP of using religious sentiments for political gain, citing multiple instances where religious faith, particularly related to the Ram temple and Lord Ram, was invoked during their campaign.

Despite this, the Election Commission remained silent on the matter.

Opposition leaders condemned Modi's remarks, labelling them as divisive and aimed at spreading hatred. Congress challenged Modi to find any mention of Hindu or Muslim in their manifesto, asserting their focus on justice for all sections of society.

In response to allegations of discrimination against religious minorities and the stifling of critics, Modi vehemently denied the charges during a press conference with Joe Biden on June 22, 2023, at the White House.

However, his denial was met with scepticism from human rights groups and journalists, leading to online trolling and condemnation from the White House.

Modi's history of controversial remarks, dating back to his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat, has been under scrutiny, with critics accusing him of targeting Muslims and promoting polarizing rhetoric. Despite the backlash, Modi's supporters remain staunch in their defence of his policies and statements.
