Guwahati: For the first time, the newly settled Bru voters of Tripura exercised their franchise for the General Elections to Lok Sabha 2024 on Friday.

Earlier, they had voted in the assembly elections held last year in March.

Bru people in India are those who have been displaced from Mizoram and have found shelter in Tripura.

According to reports, the Bru migrants who had been staying in six relief camps of North Tripura district till 2020 now have received permanent settlement in 12 locations across the state.

Since Friday morning, eligible voters from the Bru community turned up in large numbers at the polling stations.

At the Goenang Para polling station in the Tirthamukh area under the Gomati district, hundreds of Bru voters cast their votes.

The Northeast state of Tripura is witnessing a high voter turnout in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections held on Friday (April 26).

54.47 per cent voter turnout was recorded in Tripura till 1 pm, the Election Commission of India (ECI) informed.

The Tripura East constituency went to polls in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

Tripura East Lok Sabha constituency is reserved for scheduled tribes (ST).

In Tripura East Lok Sabha constituency, the electoral contest features BJP candidate Kriti Singh Debbarma competing against INDIA bloc candidate and CPI-M leader Rajendra Reang.

The Tripura East Lok Sabha constituency encompasses all assembly segments of the Dhalai, North, Unakoti, and Khowai districts, as well as four assembly constituencies of South Tripura and three assembly constituencies in the Gomati district.
