Peace and stability in Assam for last three years: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma
GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Friday (June 07), praised the state government's efforts in establishing lasting peace and stability over the past three years.
These efforts, according to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, have involved persuading various militant groups to surrender and join the mainstream.
CM Sarma highlighted the initiatives by the Assam government, supported by the central government, in bringing peace and stability to the state.
"In the last 3 years, due to the sustained efforts of our government and with active support from government of India, peace and stability have become permanent features in the state. Almost all major militant groups have surrendered and joined the mainstream," he stated.
Sarma provided details on the peace accords signed since 2021, facilitated by the BJP-led governments in Assam and at the Centre.
These agreements include four major peace accords with insurgent groups such as the Karbi outfits (KLNLF, KPLT, PDCK, and UPLA), Adivasi groups (APA, AANLA, ACMA, BCF, and STF), the Dimasa militant outfit DNLA, and ULFA (Pro-Talk).
He also mentioned the significant 2020 peace pact with the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), which led to the surrender and rehabilitation of 9583 cadres.
Furthermore, the areas under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) were reduced in Nagaland, Assam, and Manipur last year, with only four districts in Assam currently under the law's ambit, he said.
