Guwahati: As part of Indian Railways’ target of achieving net zero carbon emission and 100 per cent electrification to become the world’s largest green railways, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NF Railway) is speeding up all electrification works of unelectrified broad-gauge routes under its jurisdiction.

The Northeast Frontier Railway has so far achieved electrification of 2,708.52 route kilometres, which is 64 per cent of the total 4,260.52 route kilometres of the network.

In the eight Northeastern states, 1,524.71 route kilometres have been electrified so far.

Out of the total electrified routes in the Northeastern region, 1,353.231 route kilometres in Assam, 2.81 route kilometres in Manipur, 9.58 route kilometres in Meghalaya, 6.00 route kilometres in Nagaland and 151.59 route kilometres in Tripura have already been electrified.

The electrification works are being executed in a phased manner by the Indian Railway Construction International Limited (IRCON), Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES), and the NF Railway Construction in different sections under the zone.

Electrification will significantly improve the mobility of trains under the jurisdiction of NF Railway and strengthen the rail network in the Northeastern states.

It will also provide an eco-friendly, faster and energy-efficient mode of transportation.

In addition to reduction in pollution, dependence on imported crude oil will also be reduced, thereby saving foreign currency.

It would further facilitate seamless traffic and increase the average speed of trains, resulting in punctuality of train movement, eliminating detention on account of traction change.
