Imphal: A 33-year-old personnel of the Village Defense Forces (VDF) of the Manipur Police Department sustained injuries when the gun he was holding went off accidentally at a camp located in the Sekmai Laikot village about 20 km from Imphal in the early hours of Friday.

The sophisticated weapon he was holding went off incidentally when he tried to retaliate in an exchange of firing with the miscreants in and around the Sekmai Laikot and Nongthnbam areas at around 1:15 am on Friday, the police said.

A bullet fired from his service gun ricochetted and hit on hard tiled floor of the room causing injury on his left calf.

The injured VDF personnel later identified as Wangmayum Baduddin, 33, son of W Abdul Latif, a resident of Mayang Imphal Mengul village was immediately rushed to the Raj Medicity hospital for treatment, the police added.

The VDF personnel of the Manipur Home Department have been pressed into services in the protection of the general masses in the ongoing communal violence between the Meiteis and Kukis that started on May 3, 2023, and that cost the lives of over 230 individuals to date.
