Two vehicles set on fire at Tronglaobi village in Manipur
Imphal: Manipur police opened tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse a crowd who torched two trucks loaded with iron rods plying towards Churachandpur from Imphal on Saturday.
The incident happened at Tronglaobi village on the state highway under the Moirang police station in Manipur’s Bishnupur district at around 3 pm on Saturday, the police said.
A total of four trucks loaded with iron beams plying towards Churachandpur district headquarters from Imphal were intercepted by several people mostly womenfolks at Tronglaobi village.
Of the four vehicles, the irate people set on fire two trucks.
One of the vehicles was badly damaged in the fire.
On receiving the report two fire tenders (FTs) from Moirang Fire Services and one FT from Bishnupur district headquarters rushed to the sport but the irate mobs prevented them from entering the spot.
However, with the arrival of Casper (Military) vehicles occupied by the Sikh regiments posted at Naransena villages in the Bishnupur district, the situation was under control, the police said.
All the vehicles belonging to a company from outside the state were plying towards Churachandpur carrying building construction materials.
The intervention of the police personnel deployed at the Moirang police station, Silkh regiments, and Fire services managed to save the two vehicles unharmed, the sources said.
The situation in and around the said village is tense but under control, the police added.
Notably, transportation of any sort of item from Imphal to Churachandpur and vice-versa has been restricted by warring communities owing to the ongoing communal violence in the state.
Police registered a case in this regard and investigations are underway, the police added.
