Two held in Tripura while smuggling cannabis worth Rs 55 lakh
Agartala: Tripura Police made a significant seizure by arresting two individuals and confiscating cannabis worth Rs. 55 lakh on Wednesday.
The operation unfolded in Kumarghat, where Sankar Saha, Officer-in-Charge of the Kumarghat Police Station, disclosed that they acted upon a tip-off regarding the employment of a fake ambulance for smuggling purposes.
Saha detailed the events, stating that the fake ambulance was chosen for its typically unquestioned status by law enforcement.
Upon receiving the tip, a checkpoint was swiftly established in Kumarghat. When the vehicle in question was signalled to stop, it attempted to evade capture.
However, law enforcement, in collaboration with Sub-division Police Officer Kamal Debbarma, engaged in a pursuit that concluded with the successful interception of the vehicle after a chase spanning approximately 5 kilometers.
Upon inspection, the vehicle yielded a significant haul - 272 kilograms of cannabis, valued at around Rs. 55 lakh. The two individuals, identified as Titian Miah and Mamon Miah hailing from Sonamura in Sepahijala District, were promptly apprehended. Additionally, three fake number plates were seized.
It was revealed that the individuals were en route to Assam, intending to smuggle the cannabis across state lines.
The seizure represents a significant blow to illicit drug trafficking efforts, underscoring the vigilance and effectiveness of law enforcement in combating such activities.
