Suspected ZUF cadre killed by NSCN (IM) activists in Manipur
Imphal: One suspected member of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) was reportedly killed in captivity at Chuwangphu Nungmang village under the Keithelmanbi police station in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, officials said on Friday.
Pungleinung alias Alu, 45, who is stated to be an active cadre of the ZUF was nabbed by the alleged activists of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland, Issac Muiva (NSCN-IM) near the office of the Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation Manipur at Chuwangphu Nungmang village, Kangpokpi district.
Around six to seven armed cadres of the NSCN (IM) reportedly sprayed fire with bullets after overpowering the ZUF cadre at gunpoint who was taking shelter at the RNYOM office.
Pungleinung, a resident of Dolang Chiru village in Manipur’s Noney district received six bullets and died on the spot at around 3:30 pm on Thursday, the officials said.
Police registered a case in this regard, the police said.
The ZUF and NSCN (IM) which are at the peace talks with the government at the centre have been at the loggerheads over causing/imparting hardships to the villagers of Tamenglong District, Manipur by a particular underground group for the past many months.
Notably, in December 2023, a fierce gunfight in Manipur’s Noney district resulted in the deaths of three militants from the same Naga insurgent groups.
