Miscreants kill 22-year-old 'village volunteer' in Manipur

Imphal: A 22-year-old 'village volunteer" belonging to the Meitei community lost his life in an attack made by the miscreants at the ravine of Manipur's Sinam Hills, the hotspot of the ongoing ethnic violence between the two warring communities in the state, officials said on Saturday.

The Sinam hills share a border with Kangpokpi district which is predominantly inhabited by the Kuki communities.

Laishram Boycha also called Prem, 22, a resident of Sinam Mamang Leikai, under the Imphal East district and son of L Olendro, died when he was reportedly hit by a bullet.

Prem fell into a deep gorge from the hill slope while fighting gunfire with the miscreants at 4:30 pm on Friday and his body was recovered on the deep ravine at around 7 am on Saturday.

His body has been sent to the state government-run JNIMS hospital, Imphal for post-mortem, officials said.

In the ongoing ethnic violence between the Kukis and Meiteis that started on May 3, 2023, over 225 persons including two CRPF personnel and 13 police lost their lives.
