Guwahati: The Meghalaya government, through a notification, has made it mandatory for all the individuals and organisations, involved in circulating news through various social media platforms that comes within the state’s jurisdiction, to compulsorily register with the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR).

As such, any individual or organisation, failing to do so, and found to be violating the government order, will be liable to action in accordance with law.

The government notification is likely part of a broader action plan in order to ensure that no content shared through the social media platforms is against the interests of the state, public order, decency and morality.

The move also intends to ensure that no content is shared through the social media platforms which involve defamation of any individual or institution that is likely to incite the commission of an offence.

The notification also stated that in accordance with the provision of the Meghalaya Public Communication Policy 2024, all individuals and organisations not accredited or empanelled with the DIPR, and those involved in circulating news through the social media platforms within Meghalaya, are required to register with the DIPR by submitting the specified details.
