Guwahati: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has said that construction of fencing along the India-Bangladesh border in the state is in its final phase, with only about 40 to 45 km still remaining to be completed.

He informed that nearly 400 kilometres of border fencing has already been successfully completed as part of the ongoing infrastructure push to strengthen security along the international boundary.

According to the Chief Minister, around 10 per cent of the work is still left, mainly due to issues raised by local communities in certain stretches. He said the government is actively engaging with residents to resolve these concerns in a “mutually acceptable” manner.

“We are in discussion with the local people and trying to address genuine problems,” Sangma said, underlining the administration’s effort to balance security needs with community interests.

Sangma also highlighted that Meghalaya’s progress in border fencing has been comparatively faster than several other states sharing the India-Bangladesh border.

The fencing project is part of broader efforts to enhance border security, improve surveillance and curb cross-border challenges in the region.
