Imphal: One unexploded mortar shell and an illumination shell retrieved at a place in the Lilong area under the Lilong police station were deposed off in a controlled explosion by the bomb disposal experts of the Manipur police bomb squad, the officials said on Saturday.

On getting a WhatsApp message from the Lilong police station, the Manipur Police Bomb Detection and Disposal squad rushed to an area of the Tamyai to Chingjao road at Lilong under the Thoubal district of Manipur at around 11 am on Saturday.

The recovered explosive items were later deposed off at around 2 pm on the same day at an area of the Tharoipokpi paddy field at Lilong, the police said.

Police further stated that these unexploded bombs along with incendiary munitions, and snipers, were utilized by insurgents/militants in multiple attacks targeting state and central forces, especially at the border areas.

Police said a case has been registered and efforts are on to find the details of the culprits who kept the explosives.
