Manipur Police disrupt public meeting citing law and order situation in Kakching
Imphal: Manipur police foiled a public meeting convened by Langsai Thoua, a Civil Social Organisation to strengthen people’s movement given the ongoing ethnic violence between two communities in this strife-torn state.
The meeting came to a halt midway when a Naga leader and social activist from Manipur Ashang Kasar and Imagi Meira Convenor RK Sujata were among the eminent individuals at the platform at Kakching Lamkhai bazaar in Manipur’s southern Kakching district on Friday.
Kakching district Police denied permission for a public meeting citing disturbance in the law and order situation, officials said on Saturday.
Enraged over the police action, the irate locals and womenfolk coming for the meeting shouted slogans ‘We don’t want to live as slaves’, ‘Drive away illegal Kuki refugees’ and ‘No compromise on Manipur’s integrity.’
Rajiv Kshetri, convenor of the Langsai Thouna expressed his deep concern over inaction by central armed forces despite attacks by armed Kukis on peacefully settled Meitei villages in fringe areas for more than one year.
Kasar said that the meeting underscored the need to come up with a public resolution to bring an end to the ethnic crisis since May 2023 as the Government has failed to do so.
He stated that the government has turned a blind eye to the immense suffering faced by the innocents though repeated appeals have been made to resolve the ethnic crisis in the state.
