Manipur Police arrest militants involved in extortion in Imphal West

Guwahati: The Manipur Police have arrested three active cadres of Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) and recovered arms and ammunition from their possession.

The cadres of the proscribed extremist outfit were arrested from the Ghari Awang Leikai area of Imphal West district on Thursday (September 19, 2024), the police on early Friday morning said.

The arrested militants are - Maibam Bronson Singh (24), also known by aliases Ngamba and Thambou, Yumnam Lanchenba (21) aka Naoba, and Soubam Nongpoknganba Meitei (52).

According to the police, the trio was involved in extortion activities at Sekmai and Thangmeiband areas of Imphal West district.

The police recovered a 9mm pistol with magazine, a live round of ammunition, five mobile phones, a wallet, and a four-wheeler from the possession of the arrested militants.

The security forces have been conducting search operations and area domination in the fringe and vulnerable areas of both the hill as well as the valley districts of the restive state. 

Meanwhile, the police have put up a total of 107 nakas (checkpoints) in different districts of the strife-torn state.

Moreover, strict security measures are being taken in all the vulnerable locations and a security convoy is being provided in the sensitive stretches in order to ensure free and safe movement of vehicles. 

Movement of as many as 213 vehicles carrying essential items along the National Highway-37, and a total of 222 vehicles along the National Highway-2, were ensured over the past 24 hours.
