Guwahati: The newly appointed Director General of Police (DGP) for Manipur, Mukesh Singh, arrived in Imphal on Saturday and is set to officially take office on June 1, signifying a notable shift in the leadership of the state's police force.
As per officials, Singh traveled to the state capital from New Delhi and was greeted at Imphal International Airport by senior members of the Manipur Police. His arrival precedes his formal assumption of the role as the head of the state police, a position that entails significant responsibilities in light of the ongoing law-and-order issues in Manipur.
Mukesh Singh will take over from Rajiv Singh, who has held the DGP position since June 2023. Rajiv Singh, an officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS) from the 1993 batch, assumed command during one of the most challenging times in the state's recent history. His appointment occurred amidst severe ethnic unrest and widespread violence, which presented major obstacles for security agencies and the administration.
Throughout his tenure, Rajiv Singh managed various policing initiatives aimed at restoring peace, upholding law and order, and enhancing collaboration among security forces operating in conflict-prone regions. His leadership aligned with ongoing efforts by both state and central authorities to tackle the security issues stemming from prolonged ethnic strife.
The appointment of Mukesh Singh is anticipated to initiate a new chapter in the operations of the Manipur Police. As he readies to assume the top position, there are high expectations for the continuation of peace-building initiatives, effective law enforcement, and improved public safety throughout the state.
Officials have noted that this leadership change is part of the standard administrative process, and the incoming police chief is expected to concentrate on bolstering security frameworks, enhancing coordination among law enforcement bodies, and addressing the emerging challenges confronting the state. His tenure commences at a pivotal moment as Manipur persists in its efforts.
