Imphal: A highly decomposed body of a woman was found in a nullah near a church at the  Inspection Bungalow road in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Monday morning, the officials said.

Due to the advanced stage of decomposition, the woman’s features are unrecognizable, and her identity remains unknown.

The body was retrieved when locals in and around the Presbyterian Church were working on a sewer drain project at around 7 am on Monday.

A team from Churachandpur district police recovered the body and later it was deposited at the Churachandpur district hospital for post-mortem.

The authorities are treating the case as a suspected murder since the body was found during the ongoing communal violence between the Kukis and Meiteis that erupted on May 3, 2023, and cost the lives of over 230 individuals.

Meanwhile, the police sought the cooperation of the general masses, especially those whose near and dear ones have been missing in the ongoing violence in identifying the body at the earliest for further legal proceedings, the officials added.
