Manipur hailstorm: Roofing materials price surges, govt. comes to rescue

Imphal: The Manipur government has restricted the selling of roofing materials as demands in the market across the state surged due to large-scale damage to the properties including houses in the hailstorms.

In Imphal city, long queues were seen for purchasing the roofing materials on Monday.

The hailstorm that lashed Manipur on Sunday (May 5) has led to large-scale damage to properties including houses in the state and the demand for roofing materials including CGI roofing has suddenly risen.

The Deputy Commissioners in the state have been authorized to monitor the prices of the roofing materials including CGI sheets to ensure availability at reasonable rates as per directive of the government order.

Considering the urgent need for proper rationalization of all the available roofing materials in the district and also ensuring that it reaches all the genuinely affected family members, the following regulations are hereby made and shall come into effect with immediate effect for one week with effect from May 6 to May 13.

The order states that all whole-sellers, retailers, and shops by any nomenclature shall remain open on all days including holidays and Sundays.

• The stock position, brand, thickness, and prices shall be affixed outside their shop/establishment for general awareness.
• The rates of 30th April 2024 (or lower rates, wherever possible) shall be used as the market rate/price of the material.
• No bulk purchase/buying, including by Private parties, shall be allowed in any of the Centre/shops/establishments.
• All sales shall be only for the hailstorm-affected families and details of the sales are to be indicated in the records of the establishment; and the concerned District Supply Officer, CAF & PD, Imphal West, and representative of the Superintendent of Police, Imphal West shall monitor the entire operation of the shop/establishment in the District.
