Manipur: DMU students end hunger strike after officials fulfill their demands

Imphal: The hunger strike launched by the students of the Dhanamanjuri University (DMU), Imphal that started on July 9 was temporarily suspended on Friday (July 19) following an agreement with the concerned authority.

Students of the University under the aegis of the Dhamanamanjuri University Students’ Union (DUSU) launched the relayed hunger strike at its campus in Imphal demanding among others appointment of a regular Vice Chancellor, registrar, and staff which has significantly affected academic progress.

Irom Dimocha, president of the DMU while talking to the media at his office in Imphal on Friday announced the temporary suspension of the agitation.

The strike was suspended following the announcement of administrative job results that included the appointment of a Registrar and other necessary staff, as a resolution passed by the university syndicate in its emergency meeting on Thursday night.

The authority has assured the DMU of the appointment of a regular Vice Chancellor by August 9, 2024, for which the appointment process is ongoing.

The DMU students will be granted provisional admissions at Manipur University for further studies. DMU has approximately 10,000 students through its five constituent colleges: DM College of Science, DM College of Arts, DM College of Commerce, GP Women's College, and LMS Law College.
