Imphal: The Loktak Project, operated by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Limited, marked its 51st year on Tuesday, continuing its commitment to clean energy, sustainability and national development in Manipur. NHPC, a public sector undertaking in India, focuses on planning, developing and operating hydroelectric power projects, and has also diversified into other renewable energy sectors such as solar and wind.

The multi-purpose hydroelectric project includes a 105 MW power station on the Manipur River, commissioned in 1983 to provide power and irrigation. It involves the Ithai Barrage, which created a reservoir from Loktak Lake. While the project has brought significant benefit, it has also posed challenges for the lake's ecosystem and the livelihoods of local communities. Plans are underway for a new “Loktak Downstream” project to further harness water resources from the existing setup.
