Inmate shot by miscreants at relief camp in Manipur

Imphal: A 28-year-old inmate was shot and critically injured by two unknown armed youths who came on an Activa and opened fire at the youth in Thanga village, a part of the Loktak Lake under Moirang Police station on Wednesday morning, officials said.

Sawaijam Dhanabir, 28, son of S Rajen who was taking shelter at the Thanga Wangma Junior High School Relief Camp was shot four bullets by the armed men who came on an Activa blue in color at around 7:55 am on Wednesday.

The armed youths managed to escape after committing the crime.

The injured youth was rushed to the Raj Medicity Hospital Imphal where doctors treating him stated that his condition is critical.

Sawaijam Dhanabir is a resident of Yaiphakon village in Manipur’s Churachandpur district and took shelter at the Thanga Relief camp after ethnic violence broke out between the Meiteis and Kukis that started from Churachandpur district on May 3, 2023.

So far no outfit claims responsibility for the action and the cause behind the action is yet to be established.

Police, however, registered a case and attempts are on to arrest the culprits, the police added.

This is the first major incident of armed men injuring an inmate residing in a relief camp after ethnic violence in the state broke out.
