Govt. issues flood alert, water level of all rivers flowing above danger level in Manipur

Imphal: Normal life was thrown out of gear following incessant rains for the third consecutive day and the state government has announced flood alarms all over the state as all the rivers, rivulets, and water bodies increased to dangerous marks.

The district authorities in Imphal West, Imphal East, and other valley districts also ordered the evacuation of people from some low-lying areas, besides directing officials to keep tabs on the emerging situation.

Due to heavy rain, the sewerage system remained choked leading to massive water-logging in the Imphal city areas, causing damage to the property of people.

The flood-like situation was witnessed in most parts of the low-lying areas of Imphal city and municipality areas as rainwater entered the houses of people in the area.

Many people also complained of damage to electronic appliances due to flooding.

High officials were seen accompanying MC officials in the field to clear clogging to ensure a smooth flow of water.

Th. Kirankumar, District Magistrate, Imphal West in an official notification states that the major rivers in the District have touched the Warning Level in the Imphal area and are about to touch the Flood Level as of the evening of 1st July 2024;

The India Metrological Department vide its Special Weather Bulletin 06 dated the 1st July 2024 has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall activity over Manipur for the next five days that is till July 5.

The catchment areas of the major rivers like the Imphal River, Iril River, Thoubal River, and Nambul River are reported to be receiving continuous rainfall. Against this backdrop, the public in general and the people located on the riverfronts, river banks, or close to the river course are informed to ‘Stay Alert’ for any possible breach of the river banks or embankments or overflows.

The public is also informed to be vigilant and inform any Government authority (including the DC Office or Police Stations or the Water Resource Department or any other Office) at short notice for immediate intervention of the Government so that life and property can be protected.
