Four people have succumbed to Rabies in Manipur since Jan 24

Imphal: The Manipur government on Monday detected four Rabies (hydrophobia) death cases prompting the anti-rabies vaccination drives in the valley districts from Tuesday, an official of the state Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department said.

The spreading of the rabies cases came from the reports of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, (RIMS) hospital where four persons all males from different valley districts lost their lives due to caused by bites from (rabies) infected dogs.

One Khumanthem Tolangou, 63, of Bishnupur District was the latest rabies victim who died at the RIMS on March 13, 2024.

During the period from January 1, 2024, till March 13, 2024, a total of four persons namely  Khumanthem Tolangou, 63, of Bishnupur District  M Biboi, 35 of Imphal West District, Laishram Revenge (33) of Kakching District and Saikhom Kirankumar (32) of Imphal East district lost their lives in the isolated wards of the RIMS.

Following the reports of the rabies death cases on the increase, the Manipur government intensified anti-rabies drive campaigns kicking at different locations including Imphal East, Kakching Khunou, Imphal West, and Thoubal districts, officials said.

At a camp at Thoubal Leishangthem village, around 100 pets including 70 dogs were given anti rabies vaccinations on Tuesday.

Rabies deaths are 100 per cent preventable with prompt and appropriate medical care, the Joint Director of the Thoubal District Veterinary Office said, adding that vaccinating dogs is the most cost-effective strategy for preventing rabies in people.
